No Car Day--Day 1 and 2

Background to No Car Day--I came up with the idea for No Car Day. It's a way to save energy for a day and to get people used to not using a car. Me and two friends, in a group I belong to, organized No Car Day. These are my results. If you've tried this, what are yours?

The first no car day my parents actually forgot. I was really disappointed because I was really looking forward to it. The second one was more of a success. My dad woke me up on a Saturday at 7:15 in the morning. I got up, got dressed, had a quick breakfast, and my dad and I starting walking to my teacher's house off of Bird Hills. It was the spring hike for our class, and the class was all meeting at his house. We wondered how much time it was going to take to walk to his house since we had never done it before. The scenery was really beautiful and we decided that we might start walking to school more! The walk ended up taking 40 minutes and we got to his house at 8:30. We actually passed his house at first by mistake and had to call my mom for directions. The 40 minute walk passed really quickly. When we got there everyone was really amazed that we had walked. We spend the rest of the day first walking in Bird Hills for an hour with my class, then walking back home and getting lost again, then walking to the YMCA for swim class, then walking balk home. The whole day included four hours of walking. Day 2 of No Car Day was a lot of walking for me, but I'm glad I did it.

  2. Ruby and Ethan, thank you for doing a carless day and for telling your story. You gave a gift to all of us - you left oil in the ground by not using it, you took care of yourselves by being together and exercising, you kept the air cleaner by leaving the car home, you appreciated the scenery, and you showed us it can be done. Wow!

  3. We had a great carless day on Saturday. Biked to go shopping. Walked for the rest. We also did the 21st as a no-car day, if I'm recalling correctly. Thanks for the inspiration!

  4. Our first no car day was a recent Sunday, a quiet day at home after a trip. We then biked to work and stayed in the neighborhood on April 21. It's a great challenge to go "no car" when on days when we have church, sports events, and birthday parties. We'll keep trying.

  5. Ruby & Ethan, thanks for organizing the no-car days. Learning to burn less gas is one of the most important things individuals can do to help reduce global warming. And it's something everyone in the family can contribute to. At WCC, people driving cars is about 1/3 of the college's carbon footprint we discovered! I was able to do all three no-car days on April 21, 25 and 26. I was lucky it wasn't on the 22nd, cause I went to Flint and that's a LONG bike ride. I also went without using a car for the whole week from 4/23 - 4/30. How do I order my pie?

  6. I am finally reporting to you that I was able to do 2 of the 3 days. I biked to a meeting on Tuesday night and I biked to the Farmer's Market and the People's Food Coop alng with taking a bus to a garden walk downtown on Saturday. Thank you for giving me the incentive to try all that because now know I can do it. Also, it was nice to have "no car day" as a reason to give to people so they know it isn't just one weird person. I look forwad to hearing what is next!!
